Middle Battle River (Duhamel Campground to Fidler’s Monument)
October 22, 2023 @ 9:45 am – 3:00 pm MDT
This week’s hike is a 2nd pass on the trail we did on August 6th but it will be a different hike with the fall scenery. The pictures from October 30th, 2022.
The hike is a 10 km round trip, is along forest paths and across open fields with views of the glorious Battle River Valley. This huge valley was created in a matter of days towards the end of the last ice age, when an ice-bound lake covering the entire Edmonton area suddenly broke free. Bring lunch, water, medium-weight boots or good walking shoes and sun block, and you’ll be prepared for a wonderful day in nature.
Starting from the Duhamel Campground (‘Ross flats campground’ at Range Road 212C, on the east side of Highway 21 about where it crosses the Battle River, the campground is no longer in operation) at about 10 a.m. and going to Trautman Crossing/Fidler’s Monument (for Peter Fidler, one of the primary explorers/map makers of western Canada).
