Wanisan Lake (afternoon – Members Only)

May 22, 2022 @ 3:15 pm 7:30 pm MDT

A Wanisan afternoon hike with a picnic at the end at the Wanisan Shelter. Bring your “campfire” supper (ready-to-eat dinner or wieners and buns to roast on the campfire), beverage and lawn chair and flashlight.

There is some firewood stocked at the Shelter but we need more. If you can, please bring a piece or two of firewood.

The hike will be about 7 km, in the heart of beaver country! The pictures from June 1st, 2020.

We will meet at the trail head (south of Blackfoot Recreation Area) at “A99” (the end of on Range Road 204), we should be there at about 3:15 p.m. & start in to the Wanisan Stopover about 3:30 p.m..

Initial plans for the day:

  • for those doing the full hike, we’ll leave from ‘A99’ at 15:30 with Lee leading:
    • from ‘A99’ take the WTA trail but at the ‘barrier’ turn down to the lake & take the ‘quad’ trail along the lake to the Wanisan Stopover & drop gear/take a break
    • take the yellow trail to the top of the hill just before the gate into Blackfoot
    • go back to the blue trail, take it to the edge of the lake for a nice scenic view
    • head back to the Wanisan Stopover for supper and socializing
    • back to the cars at ‘A99’ via the yellow trail at ~18:30
  • for those doing the shorter hike with the group, we’ll leave from ‘A99’ at 15:30 with JoAnne leading:
    • from ‘A99’ take the WTA trail and at the ‘barrier’ continue along the yellow trail to the stopover
    • get a fire going (as long as there is no fire ban)
    • socialize until those on the full hike get back
    • supper and socializing with the full group
    • back to the cars at ‘A99’ via the yellow trail at ~18:30
  • for those who want to go to the Wanisan Stopover on their own, as long at they leave from ‘A99’ by 16:45 they’ll get there in time for the supper and socializing:
    • go on your own, starting from ‘A99’ and take the yellow trail to the Wanisan Stopover
    • the trail well marked, with our yellow diamonds and orange ribbon
    • cross the ‘barrier’ and keep going straight (the big WTA trailhead sign is just after the barrier), the trail is in great shape
    • there is only 1 junction on the way to Wanisan Stopover, with our markers clearly showing to keep going forward rather than make the turn
    • supper and socializing with the full group
    • back to the cars at ‘A99’ via the yellow trail at ~18:30
  • Note: we are out of firewood at the Wanisan Stopover, so if you can bring a piece or 2 that would help
  • Additional pictures from scouting/maintenance on May 11th, 2022
