DESCRIPTION:A wonderful full hike will go through a combination of forest & farmland\, with lunch at the historic St. Margaret’s Church on the edge of Hastings Lake. At the church we’ll connect with the Allen Nature Trail (thanks Jeff & Marja). The pictures from August 24th\, 2025. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head at “A97” (intersection of Township Road 520 & Range Road 203) at 9:45 a.m. (please park on RR203 on the north side to Twp Rd 520). SUMMARY:Partridge Hill/Ross Creek A111 to A109
DESCRIPTION:Note (updated 2026-07-11\, 17:00MT) – the trail was re-scouted on Saturday (11th)\, on the groups return the got caught in the rain. The trail became very treacherous & the hike leader was injured. \nThis is a nice easy section that is popular for birds and one of our few remaining complete sections in the Ross Creek\, Partridge Hill & Pleasantview areas. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head beside “A111” (just after crossing Ross Creek on RR 220 when going from Twp Rd 540 towards Twp Rd 542) at 9:45 a.m.. The pictures from June 23rd\, 2024. SUMMARY:Mirror Lake & Camrose Trails – NEW
DESCRIPTION:Note (updated 2026-07-17\, 14:00MT) – the trail Fort Ethier was still too wet for maintenance so we will not be hiking there this season. \n \nMost of our trails follow some sort of a creek\, river\, lake or go into a valley and the are all under water. Sherry has scouted out one of the few dry spots in the area\, in Camrose. We’ll meet at the trail head beside Mirror Lake parking lot (beside the Camrose Visitor Centre) at 9:45 a.m. with the hike starting at 10:00. We’ll follow the paved trail south to the ski club and back. As of last Monday the trail was dry & hopefully the paved paths help minimize mosquito activity. \nAs an added bonus “OleO’s Ice Cream Castle”\, where we would go after Elizabeth’s Stoney Creek hike is at the end of the Mirror Lake parking lot \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. SUMMARY:Wood Bison Trail (Elk Island)
DESCRIPTION:We are going to take advantage this summers “Canada Strong Pass ” which gives everyone free access the the NationalParks\, including Elk Island\, from June 19th to September 7th. \nWe will meet at the Wood Bison parking lot (south of the Yellowhead & the road along the fence for ~½km\, not through the main park entrance) at 9:45 a.m.\, with the hike leaving at 10:00. We’ll then follow the “Wood Bison Trail ” (trail 11) with lunch along the trail and continuing to the parking lot. The hike is a bit on the longer side (~16km) but relatively flat.  Pictures from August 20th\, 2017. \nFun bison facts – \n\nElk Island represents the southern extent of the historic range of Wood Bison and the northern extent of the Plains bison range. So\, this is an area where the two subspecies naturally co-existed.\nWood bison are the largest land animals in North America\, weighing ~900 Kg or ~1 ton. They are bigger than plains bison because they consume a lower quality diet that is composed of plants that are not easy to digest. The larger amount allows for a larger digestive tract to allow the wood bison to get the most out of these poor food sources.\nDuring the calving period so keep your eyes out for little red calves. Also\, don’t be alarmed if the females look skinny and sickly. They are recovering from the winter and giving birth.\nIf the bison are be shedding (contributing to their sickly appearances) – keep your eyes out for clumps of fur\, sometimes they even shed in “mats” which can be 1-m long. If you find some it is very soft.\nBison are classically thought of as grazers (eating just grasses and sedges)\, but during the spring they take advantage of the highly nutritious and easily digestible new growth on shrubs\, trees\, and herbs. So\, if you see the bison pay attention to what they’re eating.\nIf you want to challenge yourselves\, it’s possible to tell the difference between winter and spring/summer dung paddies –\n\nSummer dung is in a large wet mound or completely flattened\nWinter dung is rounder like a loaf of bread and may come apart in sectionsThe difference arises from the bison eating fresh\, wet plant material in the spring/summer but eat dead grasses and sedges in the winter. The dried bison dung paddies are great fire starters and smell amazing. \n\n\n\nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information.
