SUMMARY:Fort Ethier / Bigstone Creek (A48 towards ‘D’)
DESCRIPTION:This is along a very special part of the Waskahegan Trail. Starting with a living relic from Canadian history (Fort Ethier from the time of the 1885 Riel Rebellion) and a close-up look at an alpaca farm\, followed by shaded cliff-top views of Bigstone Creek and sun-filled stretches close to the water\, what’s not to like? Expect to stop at a special spot for lunch and a rest. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head beside Fort Ethier (“A48”) at 9:45 a.m. (parking at the landowners farm just off near the remnants of Fort Ethier … BTW: Google Map – Fort Ethier is actually ~600m closer to the creek & on the other side of the road). The hike will leave from ‘A48’ at 10:00. The pictures from May 25th\, 2025. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 40-41\, or contact the Hike Leader\, Helen W.\, at 780-884-3097. \nHere are the stories of previous hikes: \n\nMay 2025\nAugust 2023\nSeptember 2022\nJune 2021\nOctober 2018\nSeptember 2017\nAugust 2016

SUMMARY:Trail Clearing: Hastings Lake A94-A93 and A98-Park Gates – Tentative
DESCRIPTION:Note: this will be partial maintenance on two nearby sections off trail – \n\nHastings Lake Motet Hill Hike (A91 to A94)\n\ntoday’s maintenance will be A94-A93 (~2km)\nlast month we did maintenance for A91-A92\nA92-A93 & A94-A92 is all along a little used country road\, no maintenance required\n\n\nA98 to Meadow Shelter Hike –\n\ntoday’s maintenance will be A98-Cooking Lake/Blackfoot Gates (just over 1km)\nfrom the park gates to Meadow Shelter it is all along public trails within the park\, no maintenance required\n\n\nA99 to Meadow Shelter Hike – if enough people\n\nif we have enough people we may mow from A99-Cooking Lake/Blackfoot Gates (just under 2km) for an early November hike\nfrom the park gates to Meadow Shelter it is all along public trails within the park\, no maintenance required\nthis is a heavily used section of the trail so maintenance tends to be more of a ‘nice to have’ rather than ‘essential’\n\n\n\nMaintenance always depends on the weather; so check the website before coming out. \nIf you plan to attend contact Helen W. (helenwhitson@gmail.com) so she can provide you with the workplan details and directions to the trailhead. \nPlease bring your lunch\, water\, wear older clothes and be prepared for hiking. \nNote: The trail maintenance crew are covered by WCB.

SUMMARY:West Battle River (A57 to Schnee Hill)
DESCRIPTION:A wonderful section of the trail along Battle River\, going east from Gwynne.  It has a little bit of everything\, including passing by what used to be the historic Low’s Crossing (well historic from a WTA perspective). Checkout Gene Miskiw’s “The Battle Bridge Story” with loads of pictures he’s shared with us at the AGM a few years ago (“The Battle Bridge Story” and more). Unfortunately\, the combination of age & changes to navigable water regulations forced us to remove it\, which Karen Bell documented as “A Bridge too Far”. A sad day for us all\, but a reminder to the dedication and ingenuity of the original WTA members. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head “A57” on Highway 822 (bend near the top of the hill after the tracks & river) at 9:45 a.m.. The hike will leave from ‘A57’ at 10:00. The pictures from May 18th\, 2025. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 48-49\, or contact the Hike Leader\, Helen W.\, at 780-884-3097. \nHere are the write-ups from previous hikes on this section: \n\nMay 2025\nAugust 2024\nOctober 2021\nAugust 2021\nMay 2018\nSeptember 2017
