SUMMARY:Ministik A87 to Horseshoe Lake (10:30 Start)
DESCRIPTION:For the past few years there has been a ‘Mother’s Day Breakfast’ at the Spilstead Community Hall (20502 Township Road 502\, corner of Township Road 502/Range Road 205). \n\n\n\nWe will check to see if they will have a Mother’s Day Breakfast again in 2026\, if so we can meet at the community hall for breakfast then drive the 2km to the trailhead for the hike. \n\n\n\nThose just want to hike can meet us at the trailhead. \n\n\n\nThis will be one of our hikes within the Ministik Bird Sanctuary. We’ll meet at the trail head beside “A87” (Spilstead Access)\, ~0.2km south of the corner of Township Road 502/Range Road 210\, at 10:30 a.m.. The hike will leave from ‘A87’ at 10:45. (Note: if there is no ‘Mother’s Day Breakfast’ at the Spilstead Community Hall then we will meet at A87 at 9:45 with a 10:00 start). \n\n\n\nPlants typically seen on the trail from A87 north to Knull Lake – Coltsfoot\, agrimony\, rose\, sasparilla\, meadow rue\, dogbane\, goldenrod\, Asters\, fireweed\, thistles\, giant hyssop\, nettles\, other mints\, mayflower\, birch\, spruce\, beaked nut hazel\, honeysuckle\, highbush cranberry\, snowberry\, water hemlock\, yarrow\, yellow rattle in grass patches\, fairy bell\, false soloman’s seal\, lily of the valley\, nodding biggars tick\, and various mosses. \n\n\n\nThe Ministik Bird Sanctuary\, an important bird sanctuary for migratory waterfowl. You can hope to see plenty of wildlife as well as a fine example of muskeg habitat. This is an excellent time to visit here\, as mosquito populations are down\, but come prepared anyway (with repellent) as well as water\, sun block and lunch for another fine day on the Trail. If you have a camera and perhaps a knock-about pair of binoculars\, why not bring them too? You won’t be sorry. The pictures from October 5th\, 2025. \n\n\n\nDuring a previous hike we had the added bonus of walking with Dylan Reade\, the Oscar-nominated cameraman behind some of the great IMAX films (“Fires of Kuwait”\, “Flight of the Butterflies”\, “Dinosaurs Alive”\, to name a few). Dylan has produced a series of videos for the Beaver Hills Biosphere website. In an email correspondence\, Dylan said\, “I am particularly interested in Ministik since a portion of the sanctuary intersects with a route that Joseph Tyrell took through the Beaver Hills in 1886—which I am also covering in an upcoming episode.” \n\n\n\nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 71 & 73\, or contact the Hike Leader\, Helen W.\, at 780-884-3097. \n\n\n\nHere are the stories of previous hikes: \n\n\n\n\nOctober 2025\n\n\n\nMay 2024\n\n\n\nJuly 2023\n\n\n\nMay 2022\n\n\n\nSeptember 2021\n\n\n\nAugust 2019\n\n\n\nSeptember 2018\n\n\n\nAugust 2016\n\n\n\n\nA87 North Miquelon – Overview \n\n\n\nThis is the hike in the Miquelon & Ministic area that we did a few years ago with the “Red Deer Ramblers” and is also great for bird watching. The trail goes the Currie pasture\, past the Sanctuary Estates subdivision and the Marsh Mitchell cabin. The pictures from May 7th\, 2023. \n\n\n\nHere are the stories of previous hikes: \n\n\n\n\nMay 2023\n\n\n\nMay 2022\n\n\n\nMay 2017\n\n\n\nMay 2016

SUMMARY:Cloverlawn (A39 towards Stan’s Bench/A38 & Mud Lake)
DESCRIPTION:The “Cloverlawn” hike a modification of 3 favourites (Stan’s Bench\, Source of the Blackmud & Coal Lake North End) to accommodate a lost section of the trail along Mud Lake (as we can no longer get all the way to “Mix Stopover”). \nWe’ll meet at the trail head “A39” (on Township Road 483A) at 9:45 a.m.. The hike will leave from ‘A39’ at 10:00\, initially crossing a farm before starting a climb that has amazing views of Mud Lake\, Coal Lake and the Gwynne valley. Followed by some twists & tuns through the woods past an unusual “pet cemetery”\, stopping at Stan’s Bench before descending down past A38 where we will have lunch near Mud Lake before returning. The pictures from August 3rd\, 2025. \nAs an added treat\, Mrs. Fisher\, the landowner for “Stan’s Bench” indicated that we could stop at her place for our lunch thereby eliminating some of the risk of a wet spring Sunday. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. SUMMARY:Battle River (A60) to Schnee Hill
DESCRIPTION:This hike of 10.4 km is along the stunning Battle River. This huge river valley was created at the end of the last ice age when the melt water that created Lake Edmonton broke through the ice and drained the huge lake in just a few days. The pictures from October 19th\, 2025. We’ll be starting from the “A60” at about 10 a.m. From Highway 13 take the ‘South Bittern Lake Road’ for 5½km – “A60” is ~300m after crossing bridge just before turn going back uphill. Please park before the row of trees\, ~200m from the bridge (without blocking the farm road) to allow vehicles to make it through the turn safely. \n\n\n\nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 48-49\, or contact the Hike Leaders JoAnne B. & Lee S.\, at 780-487-0645. \n\n\n\nHere are the write-ups from previous hikes on this section: \n\n\n\n\nOctober 2025\n\n\n\nOctober 2019\n\n\n\nOctober 2017\n\n\n\nOctober 2016

SUMMARY:West Battle River (A57 to Schnee Hill)
DESCRIPTION:A wonderful section of the trail along Battle River\, going east from Gwynne.  It has a little bit of everything\, including passing by what used to be the historic Low’s Crossing (well historic from a WTA perspective). Checkout Gene Miskiw’s “The Battle Bridge Story” with loads of pictures he’s shared with us at the AGM a few years ago (“The Battle Bridge Story” and more). Unfortunately\, the combination of age & changes to navigable water regulations forced us to remove it\, which Karen Bell documented as “A Bridge too Far”. A sad day for us all\, but a reminder to the dedication and ingenuity of the original WTA members. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head “A57” on Highway 822 (bend near the top of the hill after the tracks & river) at 9:45 a.m.. The hike will leave from ‘A57’ at 10:00. The pictures from May 18th\, 2025. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. SUMMARY:Fort Ethier / Bigstone Creek (A48 towards ‘D’)
DESCRIPTION:This is along a very special part of the Waskahegan Trail. Starting with a living relic from Canadian history (Fort Ethier from the time of the 1885 Riel Rebellion) and a close-up look at an alpaca farm\, followed by shaded cliff-top views of Bigstone Creek and sun-filled stretches close to the water\, what’s not to like? Expect to stop at a special spot for lunch and a rest. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head beside Fort Ethier (“A48”) at 9:45 a.m. (parking at the landowners farm just off near the remnants of Fort Ethier … BTW: Google Map – Fort Ethier is actually ~600m closer to the creek & on the other side of the road). SUMMARY:Wood Bison Trail (Elk Island)
DESCRIPTION:We are going to take advantage this summers “Canada Strong Pass ” which gives everyone free access the the NationalParks\, including Elk Island\, from June 19th to September 7th. \nWe will meet at the Wood Bison parking lot (south of the Yellowhead & the road along the fence for ~½km\, not through the main park entrance) at 9:45 a.m.\, with the hike leaving at 10:00. We’ll then follow the “Wood Bison Trail ” (trail 11) with lunch along the trail and continuing to the parking lot. The hike is a bit on the longer side (~16km) but relatively flat.  Pictures from August 20th\, 2017. \nFun bison facts – \n\nElk Island represents the southern extent of the historic range of Wood Bison and the northern extent of the Plains bison range. So\, this is an area where the two subspecies naturally co-existed.\nWood bison are the largest land animals in North America\, weighing ~900 Kg or ~1 ton. They are bigger than plains bison because they consume a lower quality diet that is composed of plants that are not easy to digest. The larger amount allows for a larger digestive tract to allow the wood bison to get the most out of these poor food sources.\nDuring the calving period so keep your eyes out for little red calves. Also\, don’t be alarmed if the females look skinny and sickly. They are recovering from the winter and giving birth.\nIf the bison are be shedding (contributing to their sickly appearances) – keep your eyes out for clumps of fur\, sometimes they even shed in “mats” which can be 1-m long. If you find some it is very soft.\nBison are classically thought of as grazers (eating just grasses and sedges)\, but during the spring they take advantage of the highly nutritious and easily digestible new growth on shrubs\, trees\, and herbs. So\, if you see the bison pay attention to what they’re eating.\nIf you want to challenge yourselves\, it’s possible to tell the difference between winter and spring/summer dung paddies –\n\nSummer dung is in a large wet mound or completely flattened\nWinter dung is rounder like a loaf of bread and may come apart in sectionsThe difference arises from the bison eating fresh\, wet plant material in the spring/summer but eat dead grasses and sedges in the winter. The dried bison dung paddies are great fire starters and smell amazing. \n\n\n\nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. SUMMARY:Gwynne Section
DESCRIPTION:The huge valley starting at Gwynne and containing the Battle River as it flows eastward across Alberta\, was created in a few days. At the end of the last ice age\, glacier water trapped by ice formed huge Lake Edmonton. The water finally broke through the ice at Gwynne and the whole lake emptied\, creating the magnificent valley we will overlook. The pictures from May 4th\, 2025. \nThe hike will leave from A57 on Highway 822 at about 10:00 a.m.. Participants should proceed there directly on their own\, but should check the website prior to departure in case of a change. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. SUMMARY:North Miquelon - A86 (Former Store) to A85 (Miquelon Park)
DESCRIPTION:The hike will start beside the site of the former store (A86)\, initially going past a new pond that cut through our trail\, then on to St. FX Lookout\, Erickson’s Curvert and into Miquelon Provincial Park where we’ll stop for lunch at one of the campsites. The beavers are always active around the new pond\, so the first ¾km may have some deadfall to step-over\, even within hours of trail maintenance\, but after that it will be smooth sailing. Pictures from May 11th\, 2025. \n\n\n\nThere is limited parking at the trailhead so we’ll meet at the parking lot at the Spilstead Community Hall at 9:45. (~3km from the away). To minimize the number of vehicles near the trailhead we may carpool from the community hall & we’ll leave from the community hall promptly at 10:00.  \n\n\n\nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 70-71\, or contact the Hike Leader\, Helen W.\, at 780-884-3097. \n\n\n\nHere are the stories of previous hikes: \n\n\n\n\nMay 2025\n\n\n\nSeptember 2024\n\n\n\nApril 2023\n\n\n\nAugust 2022\n\n\n\nAugust 2020\n\n\n\nJuly 2017\n\n\n\nJuly 2016
