SUMMARY:Battle River (A60) to Schnee Hill
DESCRIPTION:This hike of 10.4 km is along the stunning Battle River. This huge river valley was created at the end of the last ice age when the melt water that created Lake Edmonton broke through the ice and drained the huge lake in just a few days. The pictures from October 19th\, 2025. We’ll be starting from the “A60” at about 10 a.m. From Highway 13 take the ‘South Bittern Lake Road’ for 5½km – “A60” is ~300m after crossing bridge just before turn going back uphill. Please park before the row of trees\, ~200m from the bridge (without blocking the farm road) to allow vehicles to make it through the turn safely. \n\n\n\nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 48-49\, or contact the Hike Leaders JoAnne B. & Lee S.\, at 780-487-0645. \n\n\n\nHere are the write-ups from previous hikes on this section: \n\n\n\n\nOctober 2025\n\n\n\nOctober 2019\n\n\n\nOctober 2017\n\n\n\nOctober 2016

SUMMARY:Cloverlawn (A39 towards Stan’s Bench/A38 & Mud Lake)
DESCRIPTION:The “Cloverlawn” hike a modification of 3 favourites (Stan’s Bench\, Source of the Blackmud & Coal Lake North End) to accommodate a lost section of the trail along Mud Lake (as we can no longer get all the way to “Mix Stopover”). \nWe’ll meet at the trail head “A39” (on Township Road 483A) at 9:45 a.m.. The hike will leave from ‘A39’ at 10:00\, initially crossing a farm before starting a climb that has amazing views of Mud Lake\, Coal Lake and the Gwynne valley. Followed by some twists & tuns through the woods past an unusual “pet cemetery”\, stopping at Stan’s Bench before descending down past A38 where we will have lunch near Mud Lake before returning. The pictures from August 3rd\, 2025. \nAs an added treat\, Mrs. Fisher\, the landowner for “Stan’s Bench” indicated that we could stop at her place for our lunch thereby eliminating some of the risk of a wet spring Sunday. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 28-29\, or contact the Hike Leader\, Martha M. at 780-913-9779. \nHere are the stories of previous hikes: \n\nAugust 2025\nJune 2024\nMay 2022\nAugust 2021\nJuly 2018\nMay 2017

SUMMARY:Ministik A87 to Horseshoe Lake (10:30 Start)
DESCRIPTION:For the past few years there has been a ‘Mother’s Day Breakfast’ at the Spilstead Community Hall (20502 Township Road 502\, corner of Township Road 502/Range Road 205). \n\n\n\nWe will check to see if they will have a Mother’s Day Breakfast again in 2026\, if so we can meet at the community hall for breakfast then drive the 2km to the trailhead for the hike. \n\n\n\nThose just want to hike can meet us at the trailhead. \n\n\n\nThis will be one of our hikes within the Ministik Bird Sanctuary. We’ll meet at the trail head beside “A87” (Spilstead Access)\, ~0.2km south of the corner of Township Road 502/Range Road 210\, at 10:30 a.m.. The hike will leave from ‘A87’ at 10:45. (Note: if there is no ‘Mother’s Day Breakfast’ at the Spilstead Community Hall then we will meet at A87 at 9:45 with a 10:00 start). \n\n\n\nPlants typically seen on the trail from A87 north to Knull Lake – Coltsfoot\, agrimony\, rose\, sasparilla\, meadow rue\, dogbane\, goldenrod\, Asters\, fireweed\, thistles\, giant hyssop\, nettles\, other mints\, mayflower\, birch\, spruce\, beaked nut hazel\, honeysuckle\, highbush cranberry\, snowberry\, water hemlock\, yarrow\, yellow rattle in grass patches\, fairy bell\, false soloman’s seal\, lily of the valley\, nodding biggars tick\, and various mosses. \n\n\n\nThe Ministik Bird Sanctuary\, an important bird sanctuary for migratory waterfowl. You can hope to see plenty of wildlife as well as a fine example of muskeg habitat. This is an excellent time to visit here\, as mosquito populations are down\, but come prepared anyway (with repellent) as well as water\, sun block and lunch for another fine day on the Trail. If you have a camera and perhaps a knock-about pair of binoculars\, why not bring them too? You won’t be sorry. The pictures from October 5th\, 2025. \n\n\n\nDuring a previous hike we had the added bonus of walking with Dylan Reade\, the Oscar-nominated cameraman behind some of the great IMAX films (“Fires of Kuwait”\, “Flight of the Butterflies”\, “Dinosaurs Alive”\, to name a few). Dylan has produced a series of videos for the Beaver Hills Biosphere website. In an email correspondence\, Dylan said\, “I am particularly interested in Ministik since a portion of the sanctuary intersects with a route that Joseph Tyrell took through the Beaver Hills in 1886—which I am also covering in an upcoming episode.” \n\n\n\nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 71 & 73\, or contact the Hike Leader\, Helen W.\, at 780-884-3097. \n\n\n\nHere are the stories of previous hikes: \n\n\n\n\nOctober 2025\n\n\n\nMay 2024\n\n\n\nJuly 2023\n\n\n\nMay 2022\n\n\n\nSeptember 2021\n\n\n\nAugust 2019\n\n\n\nSeptember 2018\n\n\n\nAugust 2016\n\n\n\n\nA87 North Miquelon – Overview \n\n\n\nThis is the hike in the Miquelon & Ministic area that we did a few years ago with the “Red Deer Ramblers” and is also great for bird watching. SUMMARY:East Battle River (Duhamel) to Rest & Be Thankful Hill
DESCRIPTION:Traditionally this was our first out of town hike of the season & a glorious way to start spring … and for the past few years we’ve also added it to our fall schedule\, providing another chance at an out of town hike before winter hits. \nThe hike follows the Battle River east towards Stoney Creek and Camrose. It starts by following the river\, low in the valley across open grassland\, but eventually winds its way up out of the valley\, stepping over a field of crocuses\, then into woods and gulleys\, and ending at the top of “Rest & Be Thankful” hill. There we stop to eat our lunches\, thankful for the spectacular views. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head Duhamel (Ross Flats) Campground (at Range Road 212C just off Highway 21 & the campground is no longer in operation). The hike will leave from ‘A62’ at 10:00. The pictures from April 27\, 2025. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes web page for essential information. SUMMARY:Devon Ravine Trails - new meeting location
DESCRIPTION:Note – due to the accumulation of snow\, we will now meet at the Public Parking Lot on Saskatchewan Ave\, to avoid driving down/up the steep road to the Lions Campground. \n\n\n\nThis is a nice 10km hike through Devon & every time we seem to do a hike there the trail has been improved. The pictures from January 7th\, 2024. \n\n\n\nThe route will be the same as past years\, but we will now be starting at the river trails (the junction of Rideau St. /River Dr\, <200m from the parking lot)\, heading to the Lion’s Campground\, through the ravine & then the Devon city trails back to the parking lot. \n\n\n\nWe will still be having lunch at the arena (it will be open for minor hockey) but with the new starting point we would be getting there ~50 minutes later\, so we’ll likely take a 10-15 minute break at the gazebo in the Lion’s Campground for some tea & a quick snack. \n\n\n\nThe Devon’s “Walking Trails Marketplace” is ~100m from the parking lot & is open until 5:00 on Sunday\, so those who want to stop in can do so after the hike. \n\n\n\nWe will start from the parking lot just outside the Lion’s Campground\, going through the ravine\, city trails & taking a few city streets (mostly Erie St. South) to the arena. The arena will be open for minor hockey\, so we’ll likely have lunch in the lobby or the stands. \n\n\n\nAfter lunch we will take the city trail by the arena\, continuing through town\, reconnecting on Erie St. to pickup the river trails again at the junction of Rideau St. /River Dr. back to the Lion’s Campground. \n\n\n\nWe will now meet at the Public Parking Lot on Saskatchewan Ave at 10:15 a.m. and the hike will leave at 10:30.We will meet at the trailhead\, the parking area just outside of the Lion’s Campground at 10:15 a.m. and the hike will leave at 10:30. \n\n\n\nNote: the ravine trails can be slick so having trax/spikes is highly recommended. \n\n\n\nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 118-119\, or contact the Hike Leader\, JoAnne B. & Lee S.\, at 780-487-0645. \n\n\n\nHere are the stories of previous hikes: \n\n\n\n\nJanuary 2024\n\n\n\nJanuary 2023\n\n\n\nJanuary 2020\n\n\n\nJanuary 2019\n\n\n\nMarch 2018

The pictures from October 20th\, 2024. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes web page for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 52-53\, or contact the Hike Leader\, Mary M.
The pictures from October 6th\, 2019. \nWe’ll be starting from the “A60” at about 10 a.m. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 48-49\, or contact the Hike Leaders JoAnne B. & Lee S.\, at 780-487-0645. \nHere are the write-ups from previous hikes on this section: \n\nOctober 2019\nOctober 2017\n October 2016
