SUMMARY:Partridge Hill/Ross Creek A111 to A109
DESCRIPTION:Note (updated 2026-07-11\, 17:00MT) – the trail was re-scouted on Saturday (11th)\, on the groups return the got caught in the rain. The trail became very treacherous & the hike leader was injured. \nThis is a nice easy section that is popular for birds and one of our few remaining complete sections in the Ross Creek\, Partridge Hill & Pleasantview areas. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head beside “A111” (just after crossing Ross Creek on RR 220 when going from Twp Rd 540 towards Twp Rd 542) at 9:45 a.m.. SUMMARY:Mirror Lake & Camrose Trails – NEW
DESCRIPTION:Note (updated 2026-07-17\, 14:00MT) – the trail Fort Ethier was still too wet for maintenance so we will not be hiking there this season. \n \nMost of our trails follow some sort of a creek\, river\, lake or go into a valley and the are all under water. Sherry has scouted out one of the few dry spots in the area\, in Camrose. We’ll meet at the trail head beside Mirror Lake parking lot (beside the Camrose Visitor Centre) at 9:45 a.m. with the hike starting at 10:00. We’ll follow the paved trail south to the ski club and back. SUMMARY:Wood Bison Trail (Elk Island)
DESCRIPTION:We are going to take advantage this summers “Canada Strong Pass ” which gives everyone free access the the NationalParks\, including Elk Island\, from June 19th to September 7th. \nWe will meet at the Wood Bison parking lot (south of the Yellowhead & the road along the fence for ~½km\, not through the main park entrance) at 9:45 a.m.\, with the hike leaving at 10:00. We’ll then follow the “Wood Bison Trail ” (trail 11) with lunch along the trail and continuing to the parking lot. The hike is a bit on the longer side (~16km) but relatively flat.  Pictures from August 20th\, 2017. \nFun bison facts – \n\nElk Island represents the southern extent of the historic range of Wood Bison and the northern extent of the Plains bison range. So\, this is an area where the two subspecies naturally co-existed.\nWood bison are the largest land animals in North America\, weighing ~900 Kg or ~1 ton. They are bigger than plains bison because they consume a lower quality diet that is composed of plants that are not easy to digest. The larger amount allows for a larger digestive tract to allow the wood bison to get the most out of these poor food sources.\nDuring the calving period so keep your eyes out for little red calves. Also\, don’t be alarmed if the females look skinny and sickly. They are recovering from the winter and giving birth.\nIf the bison are be shedding (contributing to their sickly appearances) – keep your eyes out for clumps of fur\, sometimes they even shed in “mats” which can be 1-m long. If you find some it is very soft.\nBison are classically thought of as grazers (eating just grasses and sedges)\, but during the spring they take advantage of the highly nutritious and easily digestible new growth on shrubs\, trees\, and herbs. So\, if you see the bison pay attention to what they’re eating.\nIf you want to challenge yourselves\, it’s possible to tell the difference between winter and spring/summer dung paddies –\n\nSummer dung is in a large wet mound or completely flattened\nWinter dung is rounder like a loaf of bread and may come apart in sectionsThe difference arises from the bison eating fresh\, wet plant material in the spring/summer but eat dead grasses and sedges in the winter. We will update the website if an alternate hike will occur. \n \nThis is a section of the trail features pleasant paths through woods and pastures\, an extensive boardwalk\, and finally a stroll to the top of Mottet Hill. SUMMARY:Gwynne Section
DESCRIPTION:The huge valley starting at Gwynne and containing the Battle River as it flows eastward across Alberta\, was created in a few days. At the end of the last ice age\, glacier water trapped by ice formed huge Lake Edmonton. The water finally broke through the ice at Gwynne and the whole lake emptied\, creating the magnificent valley we will overlook. SUMMARY:West Battle River (A57 towards Schnee Hill)
DESCRIPTION:A wonderful section of the trail along Battle River\, going east from Gwynne.  It has a little bit of everything\, including passing by what used to be the historic Low’s Crossing (well historic from a WTA perspective). Checkout Gene Miskiw’s “The Battle Bridge Story” with loads of pictures he’s shared with us at the AGM a few years ago (“The Battle Bridge Story” and more). Unfortunately\, the combination of age & changes to navigable water regulations forced us to remove it\, which Karen Bell documented as “A Bridge too Far”. A sad day for us all\, but a reminder to the dedication and ingenuity of the original WTA members. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head “A57” on Highway 822 (bend near the top of the hill after the tracks & river) at 9:45 a.m.. The hike will leave from ‘A57’ at 10:00. The pictures from May 18th\, 2025. \nNote: we will be going as far as the bluff ~1km before Schnee Hill\, as the section of trees just after the bluff is notorious for wasps in August. DESCRIPTION:Surprisingly\, this is a hike we rarely do through the Ministik Bird Sanctuary that continues on past the ‘Ball Berg/NCC’ section going to an old fire tower. This is of course a good chance to see birds\, including waterfowl\, as well as beaver. A small camera with a zoom lens or lightweight binoculars would be handy. DESCRIPTION:The hike is through the Ministik Bird Sanctuary and a bit beyond\, much of which is the ‘Ball Berg’ section that was donated to the Nature Conservancy of Canada by the Ball family. SUMMARY:West Battle River (A57 towards Schnee Hill)
DESCRIPTION:We ran into an equipment issue during maintenance for the Saunders Lake hike that had been scheduled\, so we are going to redo the August Schnee Hill hike. \nA wonderful section of the trail along Battle River\, going east from Gwynne.  It has a little bit of everything\, including passing by what used to be the historic Low’s Crossing (well historic from a WTA perspective). Checkout Gene Miskiw’s “The Battle Bridge Story” with loads of pictures he’s shared with us at the AGM a few years ago (“The Battle Bridge Story” and more). Unfortunately\, the combination of age & changes to navigable water regulations forced us to remove it\, which Karen Bell documented as “A Bridge too Far”. A sad day for us all\, but a reminder to the dedication and ingenuity of the original WTA members. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head “A57” on Highway 822 (bend near the top of the hill after the tracks & river) at 9:45 a.m.. SUMMARY:East Battle River (Duhamel) to Rest & Be Thankful Hill
DESCRIPTION:Traditionally this was our first out of town hike of the season & a glorious way to start spring … and for the past few years we’ve also added it to our fall schedule\, providing another chance at an out of town hike before winter hits. \nThe hike follows the Battle River east towards Stoney Creek and Camrose. It starts by following the river\, low in the valley across open grassland\, but eventually winds its way up out of the valley\, stepping over a field of crocuses\, then into woods and gulleys\, and ending at the top of “Rest & Be Thankful” hill. There we stop to eat our lunches\, thankful for the spectacular views. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head Duhamel (Ross Flats) Campground (at Range Road 212C just off Highway 21 & the campground is no longer in operation). DESCRIPTION:This week’s outing makes good use of the Devon trails along the south side of the North Saskatchewan River. The trails climb up and down\, in and out of the river valley\, making for a more challenging hike than we might be used to on other city trails. On the way back we may stop at the “Walking Trails Marketplace” on the way back to the vehicles. The hike will be about 10.5 km long\, leaving from the parking lot at Voyager Park (Parking Lot “B”\, just above the the boat launch bottom of the hill on Saskatchewan Avenue) at about 10:15 a.m. with the hike starting at 10:30. DESCRIPTION:This is a nice 10km hike through Devon & every time we seem to do a hike there the trail has been improved. The pictures from January 7th\, 2024. \n\n\n\nWe will meet at the trailhead\, the parking area just outside of the Lion’s Campground at 10:15 a.m. and the hike will leave at 10:30. We will start from the parking lot just outside the Lion’s Campground\, going through the ravine\, city trails & taking a few city streets (mostly Erie St. South) to the arena. The arena will be open for minor hockey\, so we’ll likely have lunch in the lobby or the stands. \n\n\n\nAfter lunch we will take the city trail by the arena\, continuing through town\, reconnecting on Erie St. to pickup the river trails again at the junction of Rideau St. /River Dr. back to the Lion’s Campground. \n\n\n\nNote: the ravine trails can be slick so having trax/spikes is highly recommended. \n\n\n\nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. SUMMARY:St. Albert Trails - Tentative
DESCRIPTION:This weeks hike will be in St. Albert along both sides of the Sturgeon River. The city trail is well-developed and maintained year-round\, so it’s a good choice during March. \n\n\n\nSt. Albert has a great trail system. They are likely to be cleared but throw your grippers in your car just in case. If the coming storm stays longer than predicted\, updates including cancellation\, will be communicated. Washrooms are available at St. Albert Place (5 St. Anne Street\, St. Albert). Please meet in front of the main doors for St. Albert Place (south side of the building) at 10:15. The hike will leave promptly at 10:30\, total length will be 8-9 km\, and pictures from March 15th\, 2026. There is a huge free parking lot at St. Albert Place. \n\n\n\nAs an aside\, Frank leads a historical tour of St. Albert. SUMMARY:Devon's Prospectors Point Park - Tentative
DESCRIPTION:While not part of the Waskahegan Trail\, we will take the Devonian Trail from Twp 512 by Hwy 60 to Prospectors Point Park on the river. The pictures from November 10th\, 2024. \n\n\n\nFunded in partnership with the River Valley Alliance\, the County’s newest trail is almost complete. The 6km trail spans from Prospectors’ Point to the University of Alberta Botanic Garden (formerly the Devonian Botanical Garden). \n\n\n\nWe will meet at 10:15 with the hike starting at 10:30. The hike will start at the non-boardwalk section at Twp 512 (Banksiana Road) off Hwy 60 (Devonian Way) at 10:30 and go east by acreages and through the woods turning south to the river. Please park close to the ‘super mailboxes’ on Twp 512 to avoid traffic coming off Hwy 60. SUMMARY:East Battle River (Duhamel) to Rest & Be Thankful Hill - Tentative
DESCRIPTION:Traditionally this was our first out of town hike of the season & a glorious way to start spring … and for the past few years we’ve also added it to our fall schedule\, providing another chance at an out of town hike before winter hits. \nThe hike follows the Battle River east towards Stoney Creek and Camrose. It starts by following the river\, low in the valley across open grassland\, but eventually winds its way up out of the valley\, stepping over a field of crocuses\, then into woods and gulleys\, and ending at the top of “Rest & Be Thankful” hill. There we stop to eat our lunches\, thankful for the spectacular views. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head Duhamel (Ross Flats) Campground (at Range Road 212C just off Highway 21 & the campground is no longer in operation). SUMMARY:Ministik Berg to Williams Lake - Tentative
DESCRIPTION:The hike is through the Ministik Bird Sanctuary (A89A to A88) and a bit beyond to Williams Lake (“Red Chair Lookout”). This is of course a good chance to see birds\, including waterfowl\, as well as beaver. A small camera with a zoom lens or lightweight binoculars would be handy. The pictures from June 8th\, 2025. \nWe’ll meet from the trail head on “A89A” on Range Road 210 (1 km off Hwy 14) at 9:45 a.m.. The hike will leave from ‘A89A’ at 10:00 where we will go past several small lakes towards & the ‘Berg Stopover’ & across Township Road 510 to Williams Lake. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. SUMMARY:Ministik Bird Sanctuary (A88 to Fire Tower) (10:30 Start) - Tentative
DESCRIPTION:Since this is Mother’s Day\, we’ll start with the ‘Mother’s Day Breakfast’ at the  Spilstead Community Hall  (20502 Township Road 502\, corner of Township Road 502/Range Road 205)\, meeting at the community hall for breakfast. We’ve delayed the hike start to 10:30 to accommodate those going to the breakfast. The Spilstead Community Hall less than a 10 minute drive from the trailhead at A88. \nThose just want to hike can meet usat the trailhead on Township Road 510 (just under 1 km west of the Range Road 210 junction) at 10:15 a.m.. The hike will leave from ‘A88’ (UofA Access) at 10:30 where we will go past several small lakes towards\, including what many maps list as ‘red chair lookout’. \nSurprisingly\, this is a hike we rarely do through the Ministik Bird Sanctuary that continues on past the ‘Ball Berg/NCC’ section going to an old fire tower. This is of course a good chance to see birds\, including waterfowl\, as well as beaver. A small camera with a zoom lens or lightweight binoculars would be handy.
