SUMMARY:Fort Ethier / Bigstone Creek (A48 towards ‘D’)
DESCRIPTION:This is along a very special part of the Waskahegan Trail. Starting with a living relic from Canadian history (Fort Ethier from the time of the 1885 Riel Rebellion) and a close-up look at an alpaca farm\, followed by shaded cliff-top views of Bigstone Creek and sun-filled stretches close to the water\, what’s not to like? Expect to stop at a special spot for lunch and a rest. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head beside Fort Ethier (“A48”) at 9:45 a.m. (parking at the landowners farm just off near the remnants of Fort Ethier … BTW: Google Map – Fort Ethier is actually ~600m closer to the creek & on the other side of the road). The hike will leave from ‘A48’ at 10:00. The pictures from September 1st\, 2024. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 40-41\, or contact the Hike Leader\, Helen W.\, at 780-884-3097. \nHere are the stories of previous hikes: \n\nAugust 2023\nSeptember 2022\nJune 2021\nOctober 2018\nSeptember 2017\nAugust 2016

SUMMARY:West Battle River (A57 to Schnee Hill)
DESCRIPTION:A wonderful section of the trail along Battle River\, going east from Gwynne.  It has a little bit of everything\, including passing by what used to be the historic Low’s Crossing (well historic from a WTA perspective). Checkout Gene Miskiw’s “The Battle Bridge Story” with loads of pictures he’s shared with us at the AGM a few years ago (“The Battle Bridge Story” and more). Unfortunately\, the combination of age & changes to navigable water regulations forced us to remove it\, which Karen Bell documented as “A Bridge too Far”. A sad day for us all\, but a reminder to the dedication and ingenuity of the original WTA members. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head “A57” on Highway 822 (bend near the top of the hill after the tracks & river) at 9:45 a.m.. The hike will leave from ‘A57’ at 10:00. The pictures from August 25th\, 2024. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 48-49\, or contact the Hike Leader Sherry K.\, at 780-233-2148. \nHere are the write-ups from previous hikes on this section: \n\nAugust 2024\nOctober 2021\nAugust 2021\nMay 2018\nSeptember 2017

SUMMARY:North Miquelon - A86 (Former Store) to A85 (Miquelon Park) (10:30 Start)
DESCRIPTION:Since this is Mother’s Day\, we’ll start with the ‘Mother’s Day Breakfast’ at the Spilstead Community Hall (20502 Township Road 502\, corner of Township Road 502/Range Road 205)\, meeting at the community hall for breakfast. We’ve delayed the hike start to 10:30 to accommodate those going to the breakfast. \n\n\n\nThose just want to hike can meet us in the parking lot at the Spilstead Community Hall at 10:30. There is limited parking at the trailhead along Township Road 500 (~3km from the community hall)\, so to minimize the number of vehicles near the trailhead we may carpool from the community hall.  \n\n\n\nThe hike will start beside the site of the former store (A86)\, initially going past a new pond that cut through our trail\, then on to St. FX Lookout\, Erickson’s Curvert and into Miquelon Provincial Park where we’ll stop for lunch at one of the campsites. Pictures from September 22nd\, 2024. The beavers are always active around the new pond\, so the first ¾km may have some deadfall to stopover but after that it will be smooth sailing. \n\n\n\nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 70-71\, or contact the Hike Leader\, Helen W.\, at 780-884-3097. \n\n\n\nHere are the stories of previous hikes: \n\n\n\n\nSeptember 2024\n\n\n\nApril 2023\n\n\n\nAugust 2022\n\n\n\nAugust 2020\n\n\n\nJuly 2017\n\n\n\nJuly 2016

SUMMARY:Gwynne Section
DESCRIPTION:The huge valley starting at Gwynne and containing the Battle River as it flows eastward across Alberta\, was created in a few days. At the end of the last ice age\, glacier water trapped by ice formed huge Lake Edmonton. The water finally broke through the ice at Gwynne and the whole lake emptied\, creating the magnificent valley we will overlook. The pictures from September 29th\, 2024. \nThe hike will leave from A57 on Highway 822 at about 10:00 a.m.. Participants should proceed there directly on their own\, but should check the website prior to departure in case of a change. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. SUMMARY:East Battle River (Duhamel) to Rest & Be Thankful Hill
DESCRIPTION:Traditionally this was our first out of town hike of the season & a glorious way to start spring … and for the past few years we’ve also added it to our fall schedule\, providing another chance at an out of town hike before winter hits. \nThe hike follows the Battle River east towards Stoney Creek and Camrose. It starts by following the river\, low in the valley across open grassland\, but eventually winds its way up out of the valley\, stepping over a field of crocuses\, then into woods and gulleys\, and ending at the top of “Rest & Be Thankful” hill. There we stop to eat our lunches\, thankful for the spectacular views. \nWe’ll meet at the trail head Duhamel (Ross Flats) Campground (at Range Road 212C just off Highway 21 & the campground is no longer in operation). The hike will leave from ‘A62’ at 10:00. The pictures from April 28\, 2024. \nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes web page for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 52-53 or contact the Hike Leader\, Mary M. SUMMARY:St. Albert Trails
DESCRIPTION:This weeks hike will be in St. Albert along both sides of the Sturgeon River. The city trail is well-developed and maintained year-round\, so it’s a good choice during the mucky month of April. Additionally\, Frank will be dusting off his “historical tour” notes on St. Albert. \n\n\n\nSt. Albert has a great trail system. They are likely to be cleared but throw your grippers in your car just in case. If the coming storm stays longer than predicted\, updates including cancellation\, will be communicated. Washrooms are available at St. Albert Place (5 St. Anne Street\, St. Albert). Please meet in front of the main doors for St. Albert Place (south side of the building) at 10:15. The hike will leave promptly at 10:30\, total length will be 8-9 km\, and pictures from April 7th\, 2024. There is a huge free parking lot at St. Albert Place. \n\n\n\nAs an aside\, Frank leads a historical tour of St. Albert. A small portion of this hike will follow this program with Frank pointing out a few highlights. If interested\, ask him about accessing a self-guided version of the full tour.  \n\n\n\nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes web page for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, page 125 or contact the Hike Leader\, Frank P.. \n\n\n\nHere are the stories of previous hikes: \n\n\n\n\nApril 2024\n\n\n\nApril 2023\n\n\n\nMarch 2019\n\n\n\nApril 2018

SUMMARY:Devon Ravine Trails
DESCRIPTION:This is a nice 10km hike through Devon & every time we seem to do a hike there the trail has been improved. The pictures from January 7th\, 2024. \n\n\n\nWe will start from the parking lot just outside the Lion’s Campground\, going through the ravine\, city trails & taking a few city streets (mostly Erie St. South) to the arena. The arena will be open for minor hockey\, so we’ll likely have lunch in the lobby or the stands. The arena is expanding so the outdoor rink is no longer accessible & the men’s washroom has temporarily been relocated to the dressing rooms beside the ice surface. \n\n\n\nAfter lunch will pickup the city trail by the arena\, with a slight detour around the arena construction\, continuing through town (mostly Erie St.) to pickup the river trails again back to the Lion’s Campground. \n\n\n\nWe will meet at the trailhead\, the parking area just outside of the Lion’s Campground at 10:15 a.m. and the hike will leave at 10:30. \n\n\n\nNote: the ravine trails can be slick so having trax/spikes are recommended. \n\n\n\nIf you are new to WTA hikes\, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike\, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book\, pages 118-119\, or contact the Hike Leader\, JoAnne B. & Lee S.\, at 780-487-0645. \n\n\n\nHere are the stories of previous hikes: \n\n\n\n\nJanuary 2024\n\n\n\nJanuary 2023\n\n\n\nJanuary 2020\n\n\n\nJanuary 2019\n\n\n\nMarch 2018
