Wanison Lake (A99 to Meadow Shelter)

June 6, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm MDT

We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 status and will gradually restart our hikes, with some obvious protocol changes listed at the bottom.

The Wanisan Lake hike incorporates the WTA’s “Wanisan Stopover” and continues on into the Blackfoot Recreation Area. The hike will be about ~10 km along the edge of the lake and into the park starting at “A99” and depending on the size of the group we will be utilizing the various Blackfoot sections (the Lost Lake, Wanisan, Waskahegan & Meadow Trails) to be in smaller groups with lunch outside at Meadow Shelter or on the trail. The pictures from June 1st, 2019.

We will meet at the trail head (south of Blackfoot Recreation Area) at “A99” (the end of on Range Road 204), we should be there at about 10:00 a.m. with the hike starting at 10:15.

If we are a small group we’ll all take the trail that goes by Wanison Stopover and just after some beaver ponds we go into the park, then following the Wanisan & Lost Lake Trails to Meadow Shelter for lunch and then return via the WTA Trail past “Wanisan Stopover” where we exit the part through a different gate back to A99. If we are a larger group then we’ll split into 2 or 3 groups leveraging 2 trails into Blackfoot and the various Blackfoot sections (the Lost Lake, Wanisan, Waskahegan & Meadow Trails).

If you are new to WTA hikes, then you should visit the Guided Hikes webpage for essential information. For further information specific to this hike, refer to The Waskahegan Trail Guide Book, pages 84-85, or contact the Hike Leader – JoAnne B. & Lee S. via e-mail or 780-487-0645.

Initial protocol changes due to COVID-19:

  • using public trails, in/near the city (not the WTA Trail as virtually all of the trail is on private land and we do not want to impact the landowners);
  • meeting at the trailhead, no car pooling (so the start time reflects driving to the trailhead from the city rather than a 9am meeting point at Century Park or Belvedere Park & Ride);
  • the hike leader will fill out all forms (e.g., signup sheet) & please use the online waver (to minimize what we all touch);
  • Government of Alberta – Guidance on outdoor activities – “Stage 1 reopening, starts June 1” – Outdoor social gatherings are allowed up to 10 people and Outdoor physical, performance and recreation activities up to 10 distanced people;
  • recommending wearing a face mask (Government of Alberta – Guidance for wearing non-medical face masks);
  • only attend if you are feeling well & comfortable being with the group.
