East Battle River (Duhamel) to Rest & Be Thankful

The hike follows the Battle River east towards Stoney Creek and Camrose. It starts by following the river, low in the valley across open grassland, but eventually winds its way up out of the valley, stepping over a field of crocuses, then into woods and gulleys, and ending at the top of “Rest & Be Thankful” hill. There we stop to eat our lunches, thankful for the spectacular views. After returning to the trailhead, we’ll make a quick visit to the nearby old Duhamel Church, built in 1883 and restored with Waskahegans working on mending the roof. It has an interesting graveyard. Note: this is the start of our 9am departures from Edmonton.

The hike will leave from the Duhamel (Ross Flats) Campground (at Range Road 212C just off Highway 21) at about 10 a.m. In Edmonton we will meet at the Century Park ‘Park & Ride’ (‘Free Parking’ Section I, near the 109th Street Entrance/Exit) and carpool leaving at 9 a.m. Participants may proceed there directly on their own, but should check the website prior to departure in case of a change.
