Clearing Saunders Lake Trail

We used the predator & mower to clear some horrible nettle, thistle and other attacking growth and usual brush; chained, signed, clipped and cleared from A29 to A30, the wooded part of Saunders’ trail.

At A29 we replaced the rotting sunken bridge with a longer one bank to bank. 004002

It seems the road allowance at A30 is still being abused. Another new fence on either side cut, as well as lots of garbage by the fire which also was filled with broken glass. We cleared up what we could.

We had hoped to get from A30 to A33 as well to check the signing and stiles and deadfall. It has not been looked at for a few years as it is usually well kept by the cows grazing and being open has little to no deadfall.

After a mornings work and lunch by the lake in the breeze, we went to Nisku for coffee at Tim’s.

  1. Most of our prairie herbes, shrubs and trees flower in the spring months. Some are still flowering in late July. By mid August most flowers except for asters , goldenrod and several composite flowered ground plants are starting to show enlarged seed pods or fruit, some with attractive color patterns. By mid August this year at the Ministik bird santuary and around the east side of Saunders lake one could spot some of these colorful seed pods along the edge of the just-maintained trail. Soloman’s seal(marroon strips on green) , fairy bells (bright red dime-sized balls), dogbane( long green-turning bright red, bean like, seed pods from the sweet smelling flowers around a high ridge around a beaver pond experienced in June. Do the colors help in seen distribution? Many leaves of lilies with their characteristic venation were found also.
Within 100 feet of the Caernarvon Farm sign at the north east corner of Saunders Lake Jewelweed with orange flowers was found (Impatiens capensis Merrb, forma citrina(Weath.), Grays manual of Botany 8th ed. ). This is the first time I’ve seen it in western Canada. It would be interesting to me if others have seen this in southern Alberta where there may be poison ivy. The internet says that you crush and rub jewelweed over poison ivy (PI) contact spots to denature the uroshinol poison from the PI.
