Maintenance: Meeting the challenge

Yesterday nine of us set out with a plan of 3 building projects along different parts of the trail . As is often the case, the plan is challenged with reality when we execute it.

We started in North Miquelon gaining access through an empty lot at Sanctuary Estates. Luck was with us as a house build was in progress with the basement being dried so no workmen were around. Using a barely visible overgrown path leading to the bridge built previously, we finished it with ramps and a few boards saving much time and effort as its location is in the middle of a 5km section of trail.

We then drove past Miquelon Park down Rabbit Run road to another section of Miquelon where 300 meters from the road last year we covered a wet area with a 5 section boardwalk. It now sits in the middle of a lake! So we carted down all of the wood we brought and built as many more sections as possible but were unable to place them without rubber boots. It is a task easier done when the water is lower.

With no materials left to build a new bridge at Kopp lake we were forced to call it a day and go for coffee! Thank you to the 8 volunteers out!

Pipestone Trail Cleared to Travel

With the threat of thundershowers and some rain spitting at us the seven of us set off hopeful the weather would hold. Luck was with us and we cleared a more challenging part of the trail from Pipestone Creek at Karen_John_Brad_DarleneA50 past Hwy 814 to the meeting of the Pipestone and Bigstone creeks. Happy hiking!

PS:  Our reward was 2 for the price of 1 fresh hot cinnamon buns with coffee at Ivy’s Restaurant in Millet!

Maintenance: Hastings Lake

Repairing trail markers on the Allen Nature Trail

This Wednesday June 22 we worked on a section of Hastings Lake A97 to A95 & Allen Nature Trail – A successful trip for the 8 of us done in less than 3 hours, partly because it is a shorter hike and there is some road.

We had the predator brush cutter out for the first time this season and it was marvelous even in the damp grass and brush (Geoff F. had replaced the battery).

We replaced a board and added some shingles to boardwalks, added support to a post of a stile as well as the regular trail clearing of mowing, chain sawing, clipping, signing and clearing debris.

It was great to be done earlier with such humidity and too many mosquitoes!

We ended with lunch at St. Margaret’s church.
